With growing concerns over the environment, will high-performance sports cars go the way of the dodo? Cars such as BMW’s new clean diesel 335d and Tesla’s electric Roadster are current proof that performance and environmental friendliness aren’t mutually exclusive, but what about 10 or 20 years down the road? Honda is a firm believer that there’s a place for an environmentally friendly sports car, and has demonstrated a potential solution with its futuristic hydrogen-powered FC Sport concept, a car that it is on display at the LA Auto Show.”The Honda FC Sport explores how to satisfy automotive performance enthusiasts in a world beyond petroleum,” said Dan Bonawitz, vice-president of American Honda Motor Co., Inc. “People who love sports cars will still have a reason to love in a hydrogen-powered future.”

While a number of automakers won’t be showing up at Detroit this year, luxury automaker Mercedes-Benz will be present and displaying three new environmentally friendly concept vehicles. The concepts are a part of Benz’s new BlueZero family name, a spin on the BlueTec name used on its ultra low emissions diesel vehicles.The BlueZero triplets include a pure electric vehicle called the E-Cell, a fuel cell electric vehicle called the F-Cell, and a range-extension electric vehicle (similar to Chevy’s Volt) called the E-Plus. Pictured here is the E-Cell Concept which looks similar to Mercedes’ current B-Class compact hatchback. Could this be a subtle hint at what to expect in the coming years?

It’s confirmed: Porsche will begin offering a diesel-powered car next February. Porsche has dropped a diesel engine under the hood of its Cayenne SUV. It might not be a Boxster, a 911 or the upcoming Panamera, but it’s hard to deny that a diesel wouldn’t be a good mate for the burly sport utility.As the rumours suggested, the Cayenne’s diesel engine comes from Volkswagen Auto Group kingdom. Its 3.0-litre turbodiesel V6 is similar to the engines found in the Audi Q7 3.0 TDI and the Volkswagen Touareg 3.0 TDI that are sold in Europe. With 240 horsepower and 405 lb.-ft. of torque, the Cayenne’s diesel engine is competitive within the premium SUV segment. All Cayenne diesels come fitted with Porsche’s six-speed Tiptronic S automatic transmission as standard equipment.Despite weighing more than 2,160 kilograms, the diesel engine dramatically slashes the Cayenne’s thirst for fuel. Porsche says that the SUV consumes an average of 9.3 L/100 km, and it emits less than 250 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometre driven. That’s close to being on par with the smaller, lighter Boxster S and Cayman S.

If you’re thinking about buying a “green” car in the near term, you might want to consider waiting to hear what the Green Car Journal picks as the 2009 Green Car of the Year.This year’s top five include a broader selection of vehicles, including hybrids, diesels, and one standard gasoline-powered vehicle. The cars, listed in alphabetical order are the much-awaited BMW 335d, the just-announced Ford Fusion hybrid, the Saturn Vue 2 Mode hybrid, the teensy smart fortwo and Volkswagen’s Jetta TDI Clean Diesel.

Money might not grow on trees, but diesel could according to Gary Strobel, a professor at Montana State University. Strobel discovered that fungi growing in the Patagonian forests of South America are capable of producing gaseous diesel. The fungus, G. roseum grows on the Ulmo tree, and produces toxic fumes used to kill off competing species of fungus. Upon closer study, Strobel discovered that these fumes are “virtually identical” in structure to diesel. In fact, it’s a sufficiently close match that he claims the fumes would be adequate to power a diesel engine.What makes the fungus a potential source for diesel is that the fungus is able to turn cellulose – the fibres in plant material – directly into diesel. This skips the fermentation process that normally occurs during the production of biodiesel, saving time and money. While G. roseum is found on the Ulmo tree in the wild, it could create fuel on any form of cellulose, be it trees, wood, sawdust or leftover husks after harvests. Given its potential as a truly renewable source of energy, this fungus is certain to be a hot topic in the coming months and years.

Now here’s a wrinkle that may surprise you: diesel generates more CO2 per litre than gasoline. But don’t dismiss the diesel just yet. While diesel’s CO2 output is indeed about 13 per cent higher per litre than gasoline’s (2.7 kg per litre vs. 2.4), that’s more than offset by the lower fuel consumption.For example, while the 2006 Volkswagen Golf TDI’s fuel consumption is 36 per cent lower than a gasoline Golf’s, the CO2 reduction is a more modest – though still worthwhile – 28 per cent.
