rolls-royce When the Rolls Royce 102EX is unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show next month, the fling lady hood ornament will have a decidedly different glow. In fact, it will be glowing.

That’s because the 102EX is electric. Yes. Instead of gassing up, Rolls Royce owners may one day soon be plugging in.

To be sure, Rolls, owned and managed by German automaker BMW AG, is not ready to start selling high-voltage Rollers. It is a “one-off,” fully electric powered Rolls Royce Phantom. The car will tour during 2011, serving as a test bed to gather a bank of research data that will inform future decisions on alternative drive-trains for Rolls-Royce Motor Cars.

BMW M3 Matte Edition

While some automakers roll out special editions around the entire globe, the BMW Group has of late opted to create individual specials for specific markets. Witness, as examples, the Trusardi edition 5GT (exclusive to Italy), the Z4 Silver Top edition (Japan), the M3 Pure edition (Australia) and the M3 Frozen Gray edition (United States). BMW’s subsidiaries Mini and Rolls-Royce have followed the same formula with the Mini Cooper Mat Edition (France) and Yas Eagle edition Phantom (Abu Dhabi), and now BMW has announced a new special edition M3 exclusive to China.

The M3 Matte Edition packs the same V8 engine and everything else as the standard model, but is distinguished by its special matte black paint scheme, offset by black chrome trim and high-gloss 19-inch alloy wheels. Inside there’s carbon fiber and red trim, but you’ll have to live in China and act fast to get your hands on one.

Aston Martin design studio, Gaydon

Taking on the likes of Rolls-Royce and Bentley is no mean feat. In fact few are up to the task – not even Aston Martin and Mercedes-Benz parent company Daimler. The latter has tried with limited success to turn a profit on the Maybach brand, but the latest reports indicate that it’s preparing to take a different approach.

Because Daimler is used to building cars in large volumes, it has been negotiating with Aston Martin for several years now on a new partnership that could see the British automaker – which has more expertise in small-batch production – build the next generation of Maybachs. Production would, according to reports, take place at Aston Martin’s headquarters at Gaydon, Warwickshire in England, pictured above.

What would Aston get in return? The technology – including chassis, engines and more – on which to base its relaunched Lagonda brand, which is part of the company’s portfolio but has not been used in decades. The first Lagonda luxury sedan could be built alongside the next Maybach, followed by a high-end crossover/utility vehicle based on the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class.

Rolls-Royce Abu Dhabi

Rolls-Royce has 82 dealerships around the world. But the largest of them isn’t at its factory in Goodwood. It’s not in London, either, nor is it in Manhattan or Beverly Hills. It’s in Abu Dhabi.

The latest of eight dealerships in the Middle East, the new Abu Dhabi showroom encompasses some 10,000 square feet of floorspace, including uncluttered display for five cars (Rolls currently only makes four model variants) plus a coffee bar, customer configuration lounge and adjacent service center.

We all want one of Eurocopter’s experimental Rolls-Royce powered X3s. But while that is several years away from production the company’s new X4 model is reportedly going to be available a lot sooner. The X4, a next-generation medium twin billed as a replacement for the AS365 Dauphin / EC155, could be available by the end of the year, priced at several million dollars. Eurocopter CEO Lutz Bertling recently promised the X4 will be “a game changer” featuring “a new way of flying”. Insiders speculate this means a five-blade design with fly-by-wire controls and a brand new cockpit with iPad-style interfaces. Compared with the Dauphin, the X4 will have an increased payload and enhanced performance and be safer and more environmentally friendly. We’re holding out for the Hermes edition.

Eurocopter’s ultra-cool X3 prototype (above), which combines the technology of a turboprop plane with traditional helicopter engineering, just attained an airspeed of 180 knots (207 mph) in level flight in testing in Istres, France. The X3, which was not operating at full power, is expected to break the official helicopter speed world record by the time testing is complete. Over the last few months of testing the X3 has performed such feats as reaching an altitude of 12,500 ft. and maneuvering with left and right turns at bank angles of up to 60. Utilizing a Dauphin helicopter airframe, the X3 is equipped with two Rolls-Royce turboshaft engines that power a five-blade main rotor system, along with two propellers installed on short-span fixed wings. In terms of sheer speed it still may not top Sikorsky’s experimental X2 which we wrote about last month, but its stylish looks and jet-like features should more than make up for it.
